Witching and Moaning!
Kvetchings and moanings about all things spiritual, particularly witchy things.
- I utterly despite people who claim witchcraft is "just" an aesthetic. Especially if these people go on to claim that male witches are 'warlocks' or 'wizards'. No, they're not. A male witch is a witch. Gasp. Put down the shitty TERF's children's books already, they have nothing to do with actual witchcraft (and they're crap anyway). I don't mind people indulging in the witchy/spooky aesthetic in general -- hell, I'm a secret goth myself, I can't judge :P BUT, when people can't differentiate between the aesthetic and the sincerely held spiritual beliefs...that's when I get narky.
- On that note, I hate the idea (super-perpetuated on that digital mistake, TikTok) that there's a "witchy look". That someone can look like a witch. No. No, no, and also no. There is not one look. Witches come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Someone who wears pink constantly can be just as witchy, if not more, of someone who refuses to wear anything but velvet and black. I am still a witch when I'm sitting in my Brisbane Lions boxer shorts and the rattiest t-shirt I own, just as much as I am when I'm swishing about in my blackest, most Nicksian chiffon fineries. "Witch" does not come with a uniform!
- I cannot stand it when someone says they're Wiccan...when they really mean eclectic pagan, or something else entirely. Wicca has a certain framework that its practitioners work within; if you claim to be a Wiccan, ESPECIALLY if you're my age or older, I'm automatically going to assume you work within that framework as well -- don't get up my nose if you don't. Words mean things, fools. (I am more than willing to give a pass to baby witches or new pagans who are just learning, but if you're ten years deep into the craft and unaware that Wicca is one thing and that paganism is an umbrella? Witch, PLEASE.)
- People who think faeries are all sugar and sparkles and rainbows are twee and annoying. People who think faeries are all darkness and hot sex and black leather are twice as annoying as the twee twits. Read some bloody lore already, all ye twee twits AND edgelords. Faeries are so many shades of grey. Also, Unseelie and Seelie are SCOTTISH faerie categorisations, jus' sayin'...like I said. Lore. READ IT. My god, it's all in the public domain now, anyway! What's your flippin' excuse?
- Speaking of Unseelie and Seelie, they don't mean 'evil' and 'good' exactly (except in the etymological sense), because those categories don't apply to the good folk -- they're human inventions. Un/Seelie refers to how the fae feel about MORTALS. Seelie will tolerate mortals -- sometimes barely. Unseelie absolutely will not; kill on sight. A fae can love sparkles and puppies and whiskers on kittens and cry after sex and still be Unseelie. Likewise, if your "Unseelie" prince is happily courting/sleeping with a mortal character (or several), he's not Unseelie, no matter that you've given him entirely black eyes (how original of you. I think Holly Black wants a word).
- BTW, it's spelt 'fae' (or, if you wanna get super Shakespearian, 'fay/s' also works). Not 'fey'. Fey is an adjective, fae is the noun. The fae/fays can act fey (and frequently do), but not the other way around.
- People who end up up to their eyes in misery and mischief because they "worked" with the faeries and think they're a "faery shaman" because they've read a rubbish YA novel and a couple of wanna blessed-be's books about "the fey!" deserve everything that the good folk throw at them. Just because TikTok says to do something doesn't mean you should, cupcake.
